Prom season is just around the corner, and this year the looks are absolutely stunning. Whether you're going for something soft and romantic or bold and statement-making, 2026 has something for everyone.
As a makeup artist working with prom clients across Hampshire — Winchester, Southampton, Eastleigh, Chandlers Ford and beyond — I see every style of look come through my kit. Here's what's trending this year and how to make each one work for you.
The "glazed donut" skin trend isn't going anywhere — if anything it's getting more refined. This year it's all about a hyper-hydrated, luminous base that looks almost lit from within. Think serum foundations, liquid blush and a dewy setting spray rather than heavy powder.
The key to making this work for prom is balance. You want the skin to glow without looking oily or shiny under flash photography. I use a light translucent powder just on the T-zone to keep things in check while letting the rest of the skin breathe and glow.
Best for: Those with naturally clear or balanced skin who want something fresh and youthful.
Classic soft glam — warm eyeshadow, defined lashes, a nude-pink lip — is still the most requested prom look year after year. But in 2026, the "twist" is in the details: a subtle shimmer at the inner corner, a glossy lid, or an unexpected pop of colour in the liner.
It's the kind of look that photographs beautifully, works with any dress colour, and still feels like you rather than a costume. For most of my prom clients, this is where we land after the initial consultation.
Best for: First-timers, those wanting a classic look, or anyone unsure what suits them — this is the most universally flattering approach.
Bold, graphic liner has been growing steadily and 2026 is the year it's fully arrived for prom. We're seeing coloured liner, floating liner, double flick and geometric shapes on the lids — often paired with a very clean, minimal base to let the eyes do all the talking.
This is a high-impact look that requires confidence to carry off, but done well it's genuinely stunning. If you're drawn to this style, bring reference images to your appointment so we can design something that suits your eye shape specifically.
Best for: Those with a bold personal style, confident dressers, or anyone who wants their eyes to be the centrepiece of their look.
After a few years of nudge lips dominating, bold lipstick is back with full force for 2026. Deep reds, warm raspberries, rich plums and even bright corals are everywhere this prom season. Paired with minimal eye makeup — just mascara and a defined brow — a strong lip looks fresh and modern rather than overdone.
The trick is choosing the right shade for your skin tone. I'll always swatch a few options at your appointment to find the one that makes your teeth look whiter and your skin look alive. The wrong bold lip can drain you — the right one is transformative.
Best for: Those with a dramatic or fashion-forward prom dress, or anyone who wants a statement look without it feeling too "done."
This trend is about using the same colour family across your eyes, cheeks and lips for a cohesive, editorial look. Think soft terracotta tones from lash line to lip, or dusty rose blended across the lid with a matching cheek and lip.
It sounds simple but the execution matters — the tones need to be in exactly the right family to look intentional rather than mismatched. When it works, it's effortlessly chic and photographs beautifully.
Best for: Those wearing warm or earthy-toned dresses, or anyone wanting something a little different without going full editorial.
Not everyone wants a full-glam prom look, and that's completely valid. The "your-skin-but-better" approach with a flawless base, brushed brows, subtle mascara and a tinted lip balm is increasingly popular — especially among those who don't usually wear much makeup and don't want to feel unlike themselves.
The secret here is in the skin prep and the lashes. A good base makes everything look polished, and even one coat of quality mascara elevates the whole look. I often add individual lash clusters to natural looks for a bit of extra definition that still looks effortless.
Best for: Those who don't usually wear much makeup, younger prom-goers, or anyone whose style is naturally minimal.
