Winchester is one of Hampshire's most romantic settings for a wedding. With its medieval cathedral, sweeping countryside and charming market town feel, it draws brides from across the south of England — and I've had the pleasure of working with many of them over the years.
If you're planning a Winchester wedding and thinking about your makeup, this guide will help you understand what to consider depending on your venue, and how to make sure your morning runs beautifully.
There are few settings more iconic than Winchester Cathedral for a wedding ceremony. The scale of the building is breathtaking, and the light — particularly in the late afternoon — is absolutely stunning for photography.
From a makeup perspective, cathedral ceremonies often mean a long morning of preparation followed by a lot of photographs in natural and candlelit light. I always recommend a long-wearing, luminous base for this setting — something that looks natural in daylight but glows in the softer light inside the cathedral itself. Lashes are a must.
The key with cathedral weddings is allowing enough time. There's often a significant gap between getting ready, the ceremony, and the evening reception, so we need a look that will last beautifully through all of it.
Lainston House is one of the most popular luxury wedding venues near Winchester — a stunning 17th century country house set within 63 acres of Hampshire parkland. The interiors are beautiful for getting-ready photos, with gorgeous natural light from tall sash windows.
Brides getting ready at Lainston House usually have more space and time than those rushing between a family home and a venue, which means we can take a relaxed, unhurried approach to the morning. I love working in spaces like this — there's a real sense of calm and occasion.
The outdoor grounds and parkland make for incredible portrait photographs, so a dewy, radiant finish tends to work beautifully here rather than anything too matte.
Avington Park is a Georgian mansion on the banks of the River Itchen, just east of Winchester. It's intimate, unique and genuinely breathtaking — and the classic Georgian interiors feel like something out of a period drama.
The warm, amber-toned interiors at Avington suit soft, warm makeup palettes really well — think bronzed skin, warm rose lips and lots of glow. Cooler or very neutral looks can feel slightly flat against the rich decor, so if you're getting married here, it's worth chatting through your colour palette at your trial.
For brides who want a more boutique, city-based wedding experience, Hotel du Vin Winchester is a wonderful option. It's relaxed, stylish and has a lovely private dining feel to it.
Getting ready at a hotel tends to be one of the easier mornings — good mirrors, good lighting, and plenty of space. If you're getting married here, your makeup artist can often set up properly and work in comfort, which means you get the very best result.
The Guildhall is a beautiful Victorian building right in the heart of Winchester city centre, with stunning architecture and large windows that let in wonderful light for photographs.
City centre venues mean your morning is often at a nearby hotel or at home, so logistics are important. I always ask my brides to share their timeline early so I can work backwards from when we need to leave — for the Guildhall, that often means factoring in parking and a quick walk through the city.
Regardless of which Winchester venue you choose, there are a few things worth thinking about when booking your bridal makeup:
Different venues have very different light — candlelit barns, bright modern spaces, traditional churches. Your makeup needs to be tailored to this. At your trial, it's worth discussing where photographs will be taken so we can tweak the finish accordingly.
A good makeup artist will build a realistic timeline with you. Bride's makeup typically takes 1 to 1.5 hours, with around an hour per bridesmaid or member of the bridal party. Be honest about your morning schedule and your artist will work with you.
I always recommend a bridal trial. It's a chance for us to meet, try different looks, and make sure you feel completely confident walking into your wedding morning. Most brides book their trial 4–8 weeks before the wedding.
